January, 2015

Happy New Year Blanketeers,

Thank you again for a wonderful 2014, with over 2,000 blankets donated and delivered to Agencies and our 3 local Hospitals, that many children in need were comforted. We can only hope that 2015 will be filled with Blanketeers being so caring and generous.

Throughout this past year on several occasions in one way or another I have been asked “ What makes a blanket a Project Linus blanket”. Here is the answer defined by Project Linus:

1.    A new handmade blanket that is quilted, knitted, crocheted, or fleece tied
2.    A blanket that has been turned into one of our many local drop off locations
3.    A blanket that has had a Project Linus label sewn onto it and a Project Linus hang tag pinned to it
4.    A blanket that has been logged into our NWPA Project Linus Chapter for verification
5.    A blanket that has been logged out THROUGH NWPA Project Linus to an Agency or Hospital also verified

We are required by Project Linus National Headquarters to provide them a quarterly and annual report of all blankets In and Out. This is also required in order to maintain our Non-Profit 501C3 status.

Listed below are our current Stores, Quilt Shoppes or Individuals that have opened their doors to Project Linus:

Erie County:
Joann Burkhart- 1446 Patterson Ave Erie, PA 16508    Tena Pomeroy- ( Albion) 1-814-756-4603
Yaple’s – 801 W. 26th Street, Erie PA                                Marie Bissell - ( Lake City) 1-814-74-4774
Kelly’s Sewing Corner- 3330 W.26th Street (Village West)
Millcreek Sewing – 6044 Peach Street            Super Stitch -55 West Main Street- North East

Crawford County:
Fox’s Sew & Vac Sales and Service Downtown Mall – Meadville PA

Warren County:

Linda Hajtol – 1-724-588-3289        The Gallery of Fabric- 116 N. Pitt Street  Mercer  PA

Calico Loft – 202 N. Broad Street  Grove City  PA

McKean County:

Zanadu Fabric, Yarn & Crafts -105 N. Fraley Street  Kane  PA

For your convenience I hope this list will assist our Blanketeers as to where a lovingly handmade blanket can be dropped off.

So if blankets are being given in the name of Project Linus and our numbers are incorrect, it could seriously put our local Chapter at risk.

That being said, blankets being given to children in need independently is certainly a wonderful deed.

I will be asking for assistance in cutting 9-10 bolts of muslin in preparation for our 2015 events. Hopefully by our January and February meetings I will have bags prepared for any of you wonderful volunteers who would want to cut the muslin.

Monthly meetings:
January 7th -    Millcreek Sewing Center               6044 Peach Street      1:00pm- 4:00pm
January 12th -   Yaple’s Vacuum & Sewing            801 W. 26th Street       9:00am-11:00am,

     October 2014
     Welcome to Fall, Blanketeers,

It’s that time of the year again to clean out the old and straighten up for the new. That is, those leftover pieces of material or yarn from a project that you completed during the summer. Project Linus would be thrilled if you would consider parting with those pieces and parts. We put all of them together and come up with bright and cheery blankets for many of the children in need in our Community. Materials can be dropped off at any of our regular drop off locations. Please contact me if you need a location near you.

I have been contacted twice this past month with request for additional needs of baby size blankets. So I am putting the word out for the sizes we need and a Please and Thank you to go along with this request.  Sizes can range from 30 x 36, 36 x 36, 40 x 40. These are approximate sizes. They can be knitted, crocheted, quilted or fleece tied.
As always we need every size blanket as we deliver to children from birth to age 18. We appreciate the efforts that all of our Blanketeers continually do for our organization on a monthly basis.

Monthly meetings:
October 8th- Millcreek Sewing Center               6044 Peach Street      1:00pm- 4:00pm (note- a week later this month only)
October 13th- Yaple’s Vacuum  Sewing            801 W. 26th Street       9:00am-11:00am

Looking Ahead: At this time we have no other events scheduled for the remainder of the year other than our monthly meetings.

September Newsletter

September, 2014

Happy Labor Day Blanketeers !!!!

A huge Thank you goes out to the many people that donated on August 12th for the Erie Gives Day. The funds received will go a long way in blanket making materials. We hope in the coming year to make more people aware of NWPA Project Linus, and the good that we are doing for those in need in our Community.
The following is just in this morning from Project Linus National HQ. We are being asked to forward this information onto our Blanketeers.

Take the Project Linus Baby Toes Challenge!

Instead of an Ice Bucket Challenge, we’re calling it “The Project Linus Baby Toes Challenge.” Let’s see how many Warm Hugs for Baby Toes we can create in September!

How it Works !!!!

If you are able, make a donation of $10 - $25 to Project Linus. That’s it! Then share this message with 5 of your friends and ask them to do the same thing. We can easily reach tens of thousands of people who only need to make a small donation — and we can make this our own viral challenge. We’ll put updates on this page to track how we are doing.

In the comment section please indicate that you would like your contribution to go to the NWPA Project Linus Chapter.

Recap of Celebrate Erie Weekend

The Celebrate Erie Weekend is over, but will not be forgotten. 1,340 muslin squares were colored by the very young to the young at "heart".

We want to thank the City of Erie for their support of Project Linus, with the volunteers they sent to our booth.

Thank you to the volunteers that helped either prepare for the weekend or assisted in the booth. We appreciate your dedication.

Update from Celebrate Erie

We have been having a wonderful time at Celebrate Erie. Meeting 4 year old triplets that had received blankets in the NICU at St. Vincent's Hospital was really neat.
Talking to the nurse from Millcreek Community Hospital, relating to us the comfort the children get when they receive a blanket.
Two little girls were coloring the squares- cousins they said. And they had both received a Project Linus Blanket.
Over all so far it has been a wonderful weekend meeting people who have received blankets or those volunteers helping in the booth.
Thank you........

Celebrate Erie August 15th-17th – 1:00- 7:00
-          Join us for an hour or two at our booth in the “Kids Zone” newly located between 8th -10th & State Street. We have a very large tent provided by the city that protects us from the elements. There needs to be someone from our Organization at the booth at all times. The City does provide some volunteers that are wonderful helpers that are there for a few hours at a time. So if you stop down, it would allow us to take a restroom or meal break
-          Children and Adults sit down and color all of those muslin squares that we have been tracing all winter long. Many families come back year after year and enjoy coloring the squares.
-          I will be going downtown Thursday night the 14th to locate our booth and post the information on Facebook and on our Blog.
