Good Morning Blanketeers,

Erie Gives Reminder

We are getting very excited because we are only one day away from August 9th, when NWPA Project Linus will be taking part in a one day online event- ,Erie Gives from 8:00am – 8:00pm @ eriegives.org . As a 501-3c nonprofit we qualify and are registered for this fantastic local opportunity.

This event is growing every year, in fact there are many new nonprofits registered this year. We would ask that if you give to a charity throughout the year that you would consider donating to NWPA Project Linus on that day.  Last year our NWPA Project Linus raised with your generous help $2,632.00. Over all 7 Million dollars were raised in this 12 hours of fund raising here in Erie. That is an amazing amount and we continue to have a very generous Community.

Your generous donation to NWPA Project Linus would assist us to purchase blanket making materials, such as batting, flannel, cotton material, and yarn to help us meet the growing need in our Community of children in need.

NWPA Project Linus has just made an awesome milestone at the end of June, we have delivered over 59,634 blankets to children in need in our community since our beginning in 1998. Without the support of our volunteer Blanketeers, we would never have been able to reach so many children.

August 2022 Newsletter

August, 2022

Good Morning Blanketeers,

Thank you to all of our many Blanketeers and donors for making it possible to ship 200 new handmade blankets to Uvalde Texas to help assist that community to recover from their recent tragedy.

We were still able to deliver over 270 blankets to our local hospitals and many agencies.

With the continued support of our community, we will be able to keep with our Mission of providing new hand made blankets to children in need. Erie Gives is a very big part of our being able to get blanket making supplies to our “ Blanketeers”

NWPA Project Linus will be participating in its 10th Erie Gives on Tuesday August 10th from 8:00am – 8:00pm www.Eriegives.org  we qualify as a 501(c)(3) non profit and are registered for this ON-LINE event. Last year we raised $2,632.00. That was an amazing outpouring of support shown to our organization, it would be awesome if we could reach the $3,000 mark this year.

When you click onto the www.Eriegives.org site type in NWPA Project Linus

We would ask that if you give to a charity throughout the year that you would consider donating to NWPA Project Linus on that day.  Last year on this one day of fund raising over 7 million dollars were raised here in Erie. That is an incredible amount and we live in a very generous Community.

Your donation to NWPA Project Linus would help us to purchase blanket making materials , such as batting, flannel and cotton material to help us meet the growing need in our Community of children in need.

August meetings:

8th- Coordinator’s Home – monthly meeting  9:00-11:00

          1446 Patterson Ave  NO MEETING

18th    Doug Yaple Vacuum Center –monthly meeting 10:00-2:00  NO MEETING

           1815 E. 38th Street

Odds and Ends :

- We are still in need of Boy blankets- All sizes and types ( knitted, crocheted, quilted and fleece tied) The reason that I keep putting this notation in most of our newsletters, is this. When we deliver our blankets to any hospital or agency, we need to provide a mix of boy and girl blankets. But if we get bags and bags of girl blankets, it is difficult to provide a variety for them.

Reminders:

-NICU Size Blankets 30 x 30   36 X 36 -Even though these little ones are very small, you might think that their blankets should be small as well. Not the case. These blankets are used to cover their isolettes to keep the light and sound out during their stay in the NICU.

- Remember to check your finished quilt or blanket for pins.

-Please,please, be cautious when you store or launder blankets. Recently I picked up some beautiful fleece blankets from a drop off locations, as I was coming home, I started to tear up and cough. I was unsure as to why this was going on. Well as I opened up the back of my car, there was an overwhelming scent. As we never know if a child that would receive a blanket, may have respiratory issues as well.

- Only use unscented detergent and fabric softener if you feel that you need to launder a blanket.

Looking Ahead:

February 18th 2023 -    National Make a Blanket Day

Hello Blanketeers,

Save the Date:

August 9th , 2022

We are only a month away from a very special day for NWPA Project Linus as we will be taking part in Erie Gives from 8:00 am-8:00 pm. for our 10th year. Join our very generous community by supporting our local Chapter. Erie Gives makes it possible for our organization to provide the materials to make new handmade blankets for children in need. www.eriegives.org

It could be a child in the hospital, or seeking counseling from a traumatic experience or being in a shelter. With your continued support we will be able to meet those needs. Approximately every month we deliver over 200 new hand made blankets. And just like Linus carries his blanket around for comfort, we hope that our blankets do the same.

July 2022 Newslette

 July 2022

Hello Blanketeers,

Summer has finally arrived after a bit of a rainy time. So nice to be out and about enjoying this season.

There are still sewing kits available from our recent Kit Day if anyone is interested.  Please contact me @ 814-392-5583.

***The response for Uvalde, Texas has been amazing, we are nearly at our total of 200 blankets. July 15th will be the cut off date as we need to sort and pack them up for shipping on or near the 25th.

***At this time we are asking for the generosity of our wonderful blanketeers for assistance with the shipping cost. We know that this cost will be quite a lot. Also, we wont now the exact amount until all of the boxes are weighed in.

*** Checks can be made out to Project Linus ( with a note stating- For Uvalde Shipping)

Below is the address:

NWPA Project Linus

1446 Patterson Ave

Erie, PA 16508

We know that we have a very generous community and thank you in advance for your continued support.

REMINDERS:

·        Fleece blankets need to be single, 1 ½ - 2 yards makes a great size blanket if you are tying the blanket. Remember to trim the 2 selvage sides of the fleece before you start to cut your strips and cut out the 4 corners as well.

-

·       It has been brought to our attention, that we need to be cautious with the patterns of crocheted or knitted afghans. Due to little fingers that may get caught in the holes of aghans that have a more open pattern. Sometimes it may only be reducing the needle size. We are very grateful for the beautiful afghans that we receive.

·       As always, we need boy blankets of all sizes and kinds

Looking Ahead:

June Newsletter 2022

June, 2022

Good Evening Blanketeers,

Thank you to all of you that stopped by during our recent Kit pick up day. It was very nice to see so many of our Blanketeers. Not only did many stop by to get kits, but they also dropped off their new handmade blankets as well.  If you weren’t able to make it and are still interested in picking up some kits. There are still some available. Give me a call 1-814-392-5583 or email nwpaprojectlinus@hotmail.com .

****This morning I received an email from Project Linus National HQ, regarding sending blankets to the School District in Uvalde Texas. They are requesting 4,300 single layer fleece blankets or quilts. As of a short time ago over 4,000 blankets were pledged. I sent a response to National, stating that our NWPA Project Linus Chapter would send 200 new handmade blankets. We will have all of June and most of July to meet this goal. In the next week or so I will do a count of what we have on hand with the type of blankets that are being asked for. The size will range from 40” x 40” for the younger grades and go up to the large fleece blankets

**** Patty Gregory ( National President) and 2 others from National will go to Uvalde at the time of distribution. They will present each child from K-12th grade in the entire school district on their first day of school in August with a new handmade Project Linus blanket.

**** We have a very caring “ Village”, and I know that we will easily meet this goal.

**** One more very important issue to address, is the shipping costs. Blankets are heavy and the cost will add up quickly. We ask that if anyone would be interested with off setting this cost, would be greatly appreciated.

**** This is one of the few times that our blankets will be sent out of the area. We will still meet the needs of our Chapter and our Nation.

Once again this year on August 9th, NWPA Project Linus will be apart of a very unique opportunity for this one day online event- Erie Gives from 8:00am – 8:00pm @ Eriegives.org for a seventh year. We have qualified and are registered for this event.

We would ask that if you give to a charity throughout the year, that you would consider donating to NWPA Project Linus on that day.  Last year our NWPA Project Linus raised with your generous help nearly 1,700.00. Over all 7.1 Million dollars were raised in this 12 hours of fund raising here in Erie. That is an incredible amount and we continue to have a very generous Community.

Your donation to NWPA Project Linus would assist us to purchase blanket making materials, such as batting, yarn, fleece, flannel and cotton material to help us meet the growing need in our Community of children in need.

REMINDERS:

-Due to children's allergies and possible respiratory issues, please refrain from the use of dryer sheets, fabric softeners and scented bags when either laundering or storing blanket making material.

The following is a list of approximate blanket sizes for our local NWPA Project Linus Chapter:

PREEMIE/ NEWBORN        30 X 30       36 X 36

TODDLER                             40 X 52        45 X 60

OLDER KIDS                        45 X72      ( fleece blankets are usually 60 x 72)

-        Another reminder, when you crochet or knit an afghan for babies or small children, remember to use a pattern that may not be too airy. This is for the safety of little fingers or getting stuck on hospital equipment. Sometimes you only need to adjust your needle size.

If you have any questions regarding blanket sizes or types of blankets, please contact me

 @1-814-392-5583

Thank you so very much.

ODDS & ENDS:

  • If you are doing any Spring Cleaning in your Sewing Room- please consider NWPA Project Linus. We can always use pieces and parts of material and yarn.
  • Project Linus’ mission statement is that we provide new handmade blankets to children in need. We are unable to accept gently used blankets or store made blankets.
  • If you have these types of blankets, there are organizations that would gladly receive them.
  • Shelters, Salvation Army, Women’s Care Centers to name a few.

REMINDERS:

  • If blankets are coming from a home that someone smokes in, or has anaimals that may be around your project, we ask that these blankets be laundered for the safety of the children receiving them, that may have respiratory  issues.
  • The same applies with storing or bagging blankets, that they are not stored in scented bags or have used scented fabric softener. We know that they leave a pretty scent, but for our kids, it may not be healthful for them.
  • VERY IMPORTANT- Please remove the 2 selvages sides of fleece prior to cutting the strips for tying. We receive many blankets that have the selvage on the blankets that need to be trimmed before we can give that blanket to a child in need. Your help is greatly appreciated.
  • We would gladly come to your church group, Scout group or organization and give instruction on how to make single layer fleece blankets. Contact JoAnn Burkhart 1-814-392-5583
