May Newsletter
May , 2019
Hello Blanketeers,
A gracious Thank you to the Erie
Hampton Inn for hosting our Spring “Sew In” this past Saturday and to the many Blanketeers
that came and spent the day sewing blankets, tracing squares or crocheting
around fleece blankets. We always say that it takes a” Village”.
SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday August
13th- Erie Gives 2019
NWPA Project Linus has a very unique
opportunity to take part in this one day Erie
Gives on Tuesday August 13th from 8:00am – 8:00pm @ Eriegives.org . We qualify and are registered for this event.
We would ask that if you give
to a charity throughout the year, that you would consider donating to NWPA
Project Linus on that day. Last year on
this one day of fund raising a record breaking 4.4 million dollars were raised
here in Erie. That is an incredible amount and a very generous Community.
Your donation to NWPA Project
Linus would help us to purchase blanket making materials to help us meet the
growing need in our Community of children in need.

There is still a need for boy blankets of all types and
sizes. When we deliver blankets, we always try to put a mix of boy and girl
blankets, so that the hospital or agency has a variety to pass out to their
patients or clients.
ODDS & ENDS:

UPMC Hamot NICU
has an ongoing need of gently used receiving blankets- store bought, that they
use to support the tiny heads of the infants in their carriers. They can be
dropped off at all of our local drop off locations. Again, these are items that
I have seen at Garage Sales and have picked up for a quarter or so and brought
home and washed up.
REMINDERS:
-
We have muslin to
be cut into 11” X 11” squares and then traced for our upcoming Summer events.
If anyone would like to help with these tasks, please contact me @ 392-5583 .
Thank you.
-
In making a
fleece blanket- cut the 2 selvage
sides and cut out the 4 corners of the material before you start to cut
your strips for tying or before you use your skip stitch blade and crochet
around the fleece. Single layer fleece blankets, using 1 ½ yards or 2 yards of
fleece.
-
Due to children’s
unknown allergies, Respiratory issues and sensitivities please be cautious of
perfumes, dryer sheets, fabric softeners and scented bags in
regards to making, storing blanket making material or dropping off a blanket.
These are things that we may not even think of that could set off a medical
situation for a child.
-
In the upcoming
months our calendar is a bit full of fun activities, if you are interested in
helping with any of these events, or know of someone that needs Service hours,
please let me know. As we always say “ It takes a Village “.

March, 2019
Hello Blanketeers,
I would like to thank all of
our Quilt Shoppe’s and Blanketeers for supporting National Make a Blanket Day.
Without all of you, we would not be able to deliver nearly 200 plus blankets to
our 3 local hospitals and countless agencies that service children in our area
on a monthly basis. “ It really does take a Village”… …..Our Blanketeers are a
true testament to that statement. Thank you, thank you.
-Spring “Sew In”- Date to be announced soon
ODDS & ENDS:

It’s that time of
year again for cutting muslin and tracing the squares for our upcoming summer
events. If anyone is interested, please contact me and I will get to you the
supplies. 814-392-5583 or nwpaprojectlinus@hotmail.com
REMINDERS:
-
Due to hospital
equipment and little fingers, when knitting or crocheting an afghan please use
patterns or needle size with corresponding yarn so that the completed blanket isn’t
too loose. Sometimes it might only take going to one size needle smaller
to make all of the difference.

February Newsletter
February, 2019
Hello Blanketeers,
Once again I am re-posting
the information that was taken from our National web site regarding the
beginning of National Make a Blanket Day. I have been asked of its origin many
times, so here it is:
HOW DID IT BEGIN?
National Make a Blanket Day
began in 1999 after the terrible events that took place at Columbine High
School. We found that suddenly we were in need of a very large number of
blankets, and quickly. Our chapters came to the rescue, holding “blanket bees”
all over the country and then sending those blankets to our local chapters in
Denver. It was a huge success, and we learned that we had a national network of
people who could and would help. It was decided that we would hold an annual
Make A Blanket Day where each chapter could host activities in their area to
promote Project Linus and to increase our inventory of warm cuddly blankets.
Generally, we can attribute the collection of 75,000 to 100,000 blankets to
National Make a Blanket Day!
We are looking forward to a
very successful Make a Blanket Day, please come out and support us.
NWPA National Make a Blanket Day Schedule is as
follows
Kelly’s Sewing Corner- 3330 W.26th Street (Village West) 10:00-3:00
Drop off location

Lafaro Insurance Agency @ 4627 Peach Street:
has asked to be a drop off location from now
and until National Make a Blanket Day on Saturday February 16th.
They are open from 8:30- 5:00 daily. As Always, please leave your contact information
with the blankets that you are dropping off, so that we know how has donated
them.

Correction to
Newspaper article :
-
Doug Yaple’s
Vacuum @ 1815 E. 38th Street will be a “ Sew In” location for National
Make a Blanket Day on February 16th - in error it was omitted from
the article. All of the information was submitted to Matthew Rink of the Times
News. We are so very grateful for all of our stores and Quilt Shoppes that
support our organization, without their support, it would be very difficult to
further our mission. Thank you for all that you do !!!
Odds and Ends:
Remember
that you only have until February 4th to order Project Linus T-Shirts,
¾ length T-Shirts and Sweats Shirts. Go to www.projectlinus.org
at the top of the page is the Store tab, then go into Clothing. These will go
on sale 4 times this year for a 2 week period.
Reminders:
·
Due to children's allergies and
possible respiratory issues, please refrain from the use of dryer sheets,
fabric softeners and scented bags when either laundering or storing blanket
making material, or dropping off completed blankets. Although they may
have a pretty aroma, the scents absorb into the materials, which may be
difficult to remove.
- When making a Fleece No Sew Blanket we recommend at
least 1 ½ to 2 yards of Fleece fabric. And most important, before you
start to cut the strips that, FIRST
you TRIM the 2 SELVAGE SIDES, then from there you have
options in how you wish to tie your blanket.
