April Newsletter
April, 2018
Welcome Spring Blanketeers,
Mark your calendars for:
April 21st
Please join NWPA Project
Linus on Saturday April 21st for our Spring “ Sew In” at Blessed
Sacrament Cafeteria, 1626 W. 26th Street, use the door near the
dumpster at the back of the Gym. Plenty of parking is available.
Time: 10:00-4:00
There will be refreshments, snacks, lunch and
of course blanket making kits and patterns for you to choose from. You will need
to bring your sewing machines and notions. There is no cost to this event.
We look forward to a good
time making blankets that will help children in need in our community.
There is still a need for boy blankets of all types and
sizes. When we deliver blankets, we always try to put a mix of boy and girl
blankets, so that the hospital or agency has a variety to pass out to their
patients or clients.

ODDS & ENDS:
-
UPMC Hamot NICU
has an ongoing need of gently used receiving blankets- store bought, that they
use to support the tiny heads of the infants in their carriers. They can be
dropped off at all of our local drop off locations. Again, these are items that
I have seen at Garage Sales and have picked up for a quarter or so and brought
home and washed up.
REMINDERS:
-
Please be cautious of the crochet or
knitted patterns, along with the type of yarn and needle size, so that the
finished afghan doesn’t have too big of “holes”
in it or too loose. It was brought to my attention that “Little fingers” can
become entwined in them or caught on hospital equipment.
-
In making a
fleece blanket- cut the 2 selvage sides and cut out the 4 corners of the
material before you start to cut your strips for tying or before you use your
skip stitch blade and crochet around the fleece.
-
Due to children’s
unknown allergies, Respiratory issues and sensitivities please be cautious of
perfumes, dryer sheets, fabric softeners and scented bags in
regards to making, storing blanket making material or dropping off a blanket.
These are things that we may not even think of that could set off a medical
situation for a child.
-
In the upcoming
months our calendar is a bit full of fun activities, if you are interested in
helping with any of these events, please let me know. As we always say “ It
takes a Village “.

Learn a new easy sewing pattern
Don't miss out on a great opportunity to learn how to make the " Self Binding Receiving Blanket" this Saturday March 10th at Kelly's Sewing Corner 3330 W. 26th Street in Village West. Call Kelly 814-838-7158 to reserve your seat for the 11:00 or 1:00 class. Kelly is providing the sewing kits, but you will need to bring your sewing machine. When your blanket is complete, Kelly has asked that the blanket be donated to NWPA Project Linus.
There are 2 more Saturday's after this one to learn how to make this blanket, March 17th and the 24th.
It's a win-win, you learn how to make a new pattern and kids in need get a new handmade blanket to comfort them.
